I don't get advent. It was never a part of my growing up and was never explained all that well to me. I like it in concept, sort of, what I get of it. Which isn't much.
Advent comes from the Latin word which means "coming." In churches that follow a liturgical calendar, Advent is the four weeks before Christmas. It is a time of anticipation and preparation for the coming of the Christ child. We celebrated it at home and in church when I was growing up, and I have always liked it. It's a time of lighting candles (though usually it is four taper candles and one large one--the four representing each of the four weeks and the large one representing Christ--not 24, as I am doing) and readying ourselves for the holiday.
